A #hashtag As A Platform
A hashtag is more than a search term. Used well, it’s a platform.
A hashtag creates a shared space. Anyone who uses it enters a conversation that transcends individual accounts and follower counts. The hashtag is the tent. Anyone can come in.
This makes hashtags one of the most democratic tools in Social Media. A small account can contribute to a hashtag conversation and be seen alongside accounts with millions of followers.
But a hashtag only works as a platform if:
- It’s specific enough to be coherent. Too broad and it’s noise. Too niche and no one finds it.
- People know about it in advance. A hashtag for a live event needs to be promoted before the event.
- There’s a reason to use it. Not just ‘add this hashtag to your tweets.’ But ‘this is where the conversation is happening – come and be part of it.’
- It’s monitored and engaged. A hashtag where no one responds is a ghost town.
When all four conditions are met, a hashtag becomes a genuine platform – a place where community forms around a shared interest, in real time.
