The 5-step communication framework that engages every time

Have you ever wondered if there is a formula for communicating anything in a way that gets engagement every time?

Good news: there is. It’s a 5-step process.

1. Begin with a question that will make your target audience say “yes!” in their mind

By asking such a question, you get yourself and the person on the same page. You establish shared interest in whatever you’re about to say next.

2. Clearly state the thing you want the audience to engage with, that answers the question

This could be your offering, your value proposition, your idea, your project, your line of wisdom — whatever it is. It is the thing you want them to engage with.

3. Lay out the 3 or 4 steps for how they engage

Having said what you want them to engage with, clearly state the steps they need to take. If you’re communicating an offering, this is where you explain how it works. If it’s a piece of wisdom, these are the steps for applying it.

4. State the benefits they will get from engaging

You can state what they will get more of, and what they’ll have less of. Think about both practical benefits and psychological benefits.

5. Clearly state the call to action

There is usually ONE thing people need to do to take action. This might be the first step as listed in step 3 above. Make it unmistakable.

The benefit of using such an approach: you don’t have to think about how to engage people every time. You just follow the steps.

Whether it’s an email, a project, or an entire nation getting behind your campaign — follow these 5 steps.
