The basics of engagement

Are you a believer in the brilliant basics? In engagement, there are some wonderful ones:

1. Engagement is togetherness

It's when You and Me becomes We.

Unengaged, we are separate. Engaged, we are together.

2. We are better together

As a social species, we humans achieve massive leverage through togetherness.

Everything in our lives is there because of other people — the phone or device you read this on, the coffee you drink, the clothes you wear, the food you eat, the car you drive, the communities you're in, the children you may have, and so on.

Engagement is the superpower of humanity.

3. We come together in head, hands, and heart

We can come together with something in one or more of three ways:

  • Head – know – It's communication: reception, attention, understanding, agreement
  • Hands – do – It's action: response, application, compliance, absorption
  • Heart – become – It's transformation: adaption, affection, integration, commitment

4. We engage in order of head, then hands, then heart — and then it loops

We have head engagement (we know), we have hands engagement (we do), then there is a tiny bit of heart engagement (we become).

Loop that over and over.

5. Pre-existing togetherness is commonality

Pre-existing togetherness is called commonality. Hence, the quickest way to engage someone is to notice what you have in common — where you are already engaged.
