The Difference Between Mentoring vs Coaching
Mentoring and coaching are not the same thing. Using the terms interchangeably causes confusion and leads to the wrong kind of help.
Mentoring is guidance from someone who has been where you want to go. The mentor has relevant experience and shares it. The relationship is directional: the mentor knows something the mentee doesn’t.
Coaching is facilitation from someone who helps you find your own answers. The coach may have no experience in your field. The relationship is exploratory: the coach believes you already have the resources you need.
Both are valuable. But they’re valuable in different situations. If you need experience and perspective, you need a mentor. If you need clarity and accountability, you need a coach.
The mistake is asking a mentor to coach you (they’ll just give you advice) or asking a coach to mentor you (they’ll just ask you questions when what you need is an answer).
