The Secret To Writing A Practical, How-To Blog Post

The secret to writing a practical, how-to blog post is not structure. It’s specificity.

Most how-to posts fail because they describe what to do in general terms. ‘Be more authentic.’ ‘Build better relationships.’ ‘Focus on what matters.’

These are not instructions. They’re sentiments.

A practical how-to post answers a specific question for a specific person in a specific situation. It doesn’t tell you to ‘be more authentic’. It tells you what to say when someone asks what you do and you don’t know how to answer honestly.

The test: could someone read this and know exactly what to do tomorrow morning? If not, it’s not practical enough.

Specificity is the difference between a post that makes people feel understood and a post that makes people feel equipped.
