The universal framework of an engaging event

Ever run an event but been worried about how to make it engaging?

Here’s a simple, universal framework to make any event of any kind engaging:

1. Greet everyone

Small thing, big difference. Whether it’s a team meeting, checking tickets at a cinema, or attending a service of some kind — it is engaging to actually greet people and acknowledge their presence.

2. Set the intention and desired outcomes

Let people know where we are, what we’re going to do, and why we’re going to do it. This can be done by saying it through an on-stage announcement, or shown through media such as videos or posters.

3. Do the thing, don’t NOT do the thing

A small point, but important — and very relevant to meetings. Don’t get sidetracked. Do the thing you’re gathered to do.

4. Review outcomes

Recap what has been experienced. Whether you sang all their favourite songs, solved all the customer’s issues, or handled all the items on the agenda — let people know what has been done. And if possible, get people to reflect back what’s been done.

5. Say what’s next

Years ago I saw one of my favourite bands play in the O2 arena. As they finished they said, “Next time, it’s Wembley.” I left knowing what’s next.
