The Value of a Value Approach

I am sold out on having a value-based approach to pretty much everything. A value-based approach is about giving more of yourself to people and developing deeper relationships, rather than having your thumbs in 101 pies.

By not giving lots of little, but less of more, you can build relationships that have a great yield.

This week I wanted to show you some of the returns – the value, if you will – of a value-based approach:

1. A link from Like Minds speaker Joanne Jacobs, who has received continual work from people who watched her keynote video. How I built value: I got to know someone greatly respected, and helped them when they needed it.

2. Recognition in a list of the UK’s Top Marketing Blogs – after just one year of blogging. How I built value: I don’t focus on retweets and traffic, just engaging the people who regularly comment here.

3. My intern Jonny Rose’s moving post about what he learned from working with me. How I built value: Every day we worked, we talked about what he was learning – the bigger lessons, the skill development.

4. Being named one of 1000heads’ 10 WoM Thought Leaders, alongside Joe Pine, Chris Brogan, and James Gilmore. How I built value: I gave exposure to people I believed in, however small the exposure I could give was.

All of this from giving. All of this from a value-based approach.
