Under Promise, Over Deliver

Under promise. Over deliver. This is one of the oldest pieces of business advice there is. And it’s still being ignored at scale.

Why do organisations over promise? Because it wins the pitch. Because it sounds impressive. Because the person making the promise has convinced themselves it’s achievable.

And why does it matter? Because the gap between what was promised and what was delivered is the gap where trust goes to die.

The organisations I admire most are almost always the ones that set modest expectations and then exceed them. Not because they’re lacking in ambition – but because they understand that the experience of being surprised and delighted is far more valuable than the experience of being disappointed.

One good delivery beats three mediocre ones. One client who feels you over-delivered is worth ten who feel you fell short.

Under promise. Over deliver. Every time.
